In this article Casey DeMoss Roberts takes a closer look at dispersants, specifically various forms of Corexit, the versions being used in massive amounts in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Check out the entire article, but we’re sharing the conclusion here, which echoes what scientist have been saying for weeks now – the use of Corexit, or any other toxic dispersant, in this volume and at this level has never been done. If you haven’t already read our post on Bioremediation, which underscores the danger to the entire ecosystm of using dispersants in the gulf, be sure to do so. I fear that many cities not on the gulf coast are largely ignoring the crisis this situation is, because it doesn’t feel very “local” to them.

What The Heck Is Bioremediation?

With so many people demanding the government to ban Corexit, you may have also heard about the alternative solution proposed by so many environmental scientists: Bioremediation. It’s an interesting word and it sounds like such an evironmentally friendly solution, but lots of people are asking what the heck it is. Here’s our stab at answering your questions.

First things first. To hear certain groups tell it, the oil has to be dispersed in order to be manageable, and still others say that the oceans can absorb it. New Dispersant Concerns

Well, they aren’t new to us. The article Gulf ‘Oil Cloud’ Triggers New Dispersant Concerns underscores the very real problem we’ve been yelling about:

The underwater contaminants are particularly “insidious” because they are invisible, Hollander said, adding that they were suspended in what looked like normal seawater. ”It may be due to the application of the dispersants that a portion of the petroleum has extracted itself away from the crude and is now incorporated into the waters with solvents and detergents,” he added.

“We think there could be both short-term and long-term implications … There’s a lot of unchartered territory that we’re moving into with this oil spill,” said Hollander. He said dispersants, a cocktail of organic solvents and detergents, had never been used at the depth of BP’s well before, and no one really knows how they interact physically and chemically under pressure with oil, water and gases. Early, Tragic Impact of Corexit

We are not sure how else to make the point that Corexit is not safe except to keep sharing the horrible after-effects. as they unfold. Almost a dozen clean up workers have been hospitalized after exposure to the toxic chemical. And by the way, these guys aren’t swimming in the water polluted with Corexit. The dead dolphins and other wildlife being found on shore however, are.

Let’s take a minute to review what we know about the current use of Corexit, and then what Corexit does to the living things under the water.

BP Plc’s oil spill, the biggest in U.S. history, has been sprayed with 950,000 gallons of chemicals on the surface and near the seabed to dissolve the oil into water. Proven Success – Bioremediation Video

This video clearly shows that bioremediation not only works, but works safely, effectively and without destroying all marine life and precious marshland. We must DEMAND that BP use these now and stop using Corexit. If they will not we must demand that the government that represents us seize control and do so, immediately. The health of our nation and the survival of our oceans are hanging in the balance. By the way THIS is what Corexit is doing and will continue to do until we come together and demand immediate change!
