Nineteen Days – No Corexit Alternative?
Jun 7th
It’s been 19 days since the EPA (publicly) ordered… I mean suggested that BP find an alternative to the highly toxic Corexit. More >
What Local Government Can Do
Jun 6th
Coastal Residents,
This is what your local government can do to protect your coast from the gulf oil spill. It’s not surprising to me to hear this out of Fairhope, AL. There are a lot of financial resources in that area, but mainly there are a lot of people who demand that their representatives actually represent them. More >
The Largest Chemical Experiment Ever Attempted
Jun 4th
In this article Casey DeMoss Roberts takes a closer look at dispersants, specifically various forms of Corexit, the versions being used in massive amounts in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Check out the entire article, but we’re sharing the conclusion here, which echoes what scientist have been saying for weeks now – the use of Corexit, or any other toxic dispersant, in this volume and at this level has never been done. EPA is simply nodding in agreement with BP’s use of the Gulf of Mexico as their own personal science project. More >
What The Heck Is Bioremediation?
Jun 2nd
With so many people demanding the government to ban Corexit, you may have also heard about the alternative solution proposed by so many environmental scientists: Bioremediation. It’s an interesting word and it sounds like such an evironmentally friendly solution, but lots of people are asking what the heck it is. Here’s our stab at answering your questions.
First things first. To hear certain groups tell it, the oil has to be dispersed in order to be manageable, and still others say that the oceans can absorb it. We’ve dedicated other posts to describing why the water and marine life cannot, in fact, “absorb” the Corexit. But here’s something you might not realize: More >
Riki Ott: Not One Drop
Jun 2nd
I’ve been following marine biologist Riki Ott since the spill first started, when my mother-in-law from Anchorage shared her information with me. People in Alaska know Riki very well. She’s made available the book she wrote following her work with Exxon Valdez clean up as a free download. She is asking for donations to be made available for recovery efforts on the coast. More >
Letters To Your Governors
Jun 2nd
I found a Facebook page this morning, formed to yell at Alabama Governor Bob Riley and tell him to take action to protect the Alabama coast line without waiting for BP or the federal government to act. That’s a solid message that needs to be conveyed, but I doubt if Governor Riley is reading Facebook pages these days. To that end, every citizen of every state should be sending messages to their elected officials telling them to take action in their position to have Corexit banned immediately! Simply do a Google search for your governor’s name and “contact” and most should have online contact forms or ways to email them.
To make it easy, I wrote a letter to Governor Riley (Alabama is my home) and have pasted it below. More >
Too Rational For Reality – How To Clean The Oil Spill
Jun 1st
We just really love this approach from Michael J. Evans for cleaning up the BP oil spill. Here is a snippet from Michael’s common sense thoughts, but you should read his entire plan.
When oil hits the beach, tourism takes a nosedive. The federal government should rent those vacant hotel rooms (fines and damages from BP should easily cover the cost of the rooms). Then fill those hotel rooms with volunteers and unemployed workers who are willing to travel to the beach to help in the cleanup effort. Additionally, hire fishermen and other Gulf Coast residents who are out of work due to the oil spill. More >
Proven Success – Bioremediation Video
May 31st
This video clearly shows that bioremediation not only works, but works safely, effectively and without destroying all marine life and precious marshland. We must DEMAND that BP use these now and stop using Corexit. If they will not we must demand that the government that represents us seize control and do so, immediately. The health of our nation and the survival of our oceans are hanging in the balance. By the way THIS is what Corexit is doing and will continue to do until we come together and demand immediate change!
St. Bernard Needs Skimming Boats
May 30th
If you are near the St. Bernard area with a boat matching the needs described below, consider this. However, please do NOT go on any mission without full protective gear, including and especially high quality ventilation masks. We need this cleaned up, but not at the risk of any of your lives.
